Rural Ministries Regional Conferences 2017
"Church...more than a preaching station?"
The church today is ministering in a time of rapid social, economic and cultural change, and undoubtedly the pastoral task for many of us has become far more complex. Nevertheless, pastoral care might just be one of the most compelling ways of proclaiming the Gospel and of being the church in ‘missionary mode’ serving our local communities now.
This interactive training day is suitable for people involved in pastoral care, ordained clergy and pastors, as well as regular members of the congregation. We will take a practical look through four workshops at how churches can structure pastoral care to respond appropriately to local needs within a rural context.
The workshops will be led by:
Rev Simon Mattholie CEO, Rural Ministries, and
Rev David Hughes, Pastoral Support, Rural Ministries
Workshop 1: Why care?
Should pastoral care be on our agenda? What does the Bible have to say on the subject? How do we define ‘need’? In this workshop we will address these and related questions as well as identifying some of the skills and tools which need to be developed within our congregations.
Workshop 2: Building a community of carers
Is pastoral care the responsibility of the few or the many? How can a local church identify, train and release new people into caring roles across the generations? How might we prevent burnout for the front-liner caregivers within the church?
Workshop 3: Pastoral care as an outreach model
Using scripture, we will explore together a Biblical model of pastoral care which brings about personal, as well as community, transformation.
Workshop 4: Pastoral care across the generations
Rural communities are growing and ageing faster than their urban counterparts, and this is putting them at the forefront of tackling the challenges and opportunities of an ageing society. This session will look at how we can effective prepare and minister to those who are elderly.
