‘On the Road’ - The adventure of following Jesus in Cornwall
Rural Ministries exists to help our partners develop new ways of ‘doing Mission’ so we have been delighted to be able to support the new initiative from our partner New Wave church. This is an adventure that is just starting and we look forward to further updates from Matt and Sally Timms as it unfolds.
Cornwall is such a beautiful place; sunsets over the ocean, pumping waves over golden sand beaches, fishing villages with cobbled streets, dramatic cliffs and quiet estuaries, pasties and cream teas, surf and music festivals; the Tate Gallery and the Eden Project – it’s all here to see and explore!
But underneath the Cornwall the postcards like to portray, there is another Cornwall… one of rural deprivation and isolation, of hopelessness and darkness, of addiction and despair, the realities of a fallen world… Beauty and Brokenness co-existing!
It is into both of these realities that we seek to bring Kingdom Life – we are following the voice of Jesus as he leads us to join Him in His redemptive life-giving mission in this beautiful county!
There are occasions where the Lord will release new vehicles in which we are to carry the good news of the Kingdom into our communities…. This is the unfolding story of such an occasion…
New Wave is a Missional Community based in Perranporth, on the North Cornish Coast. It was established in 2013 through loving and serving the local community and looking for ‘People of Peace’ who would welcome us into their homes and lives.
Being a ‘Church without walls’ has meant that we have picked up a range of resources that have helped us connect with our community, these being a mobile skate ramp and a 21-metre marquee.
However, in January 2017, New Wave was given another exciting resource; a vehicle… part-converted 1977 Leyland Atlantean double-decker bus!
Together we started to dream about what could be and began to ask some key questions…
What if… we converted this double-decker bus into a high-quality mobile community space with a café, wi-fi, screens?
What if… we could use the bus to initiate new Kingdom work? Parent & toddler groups, youth provision; surf and music festivals; OAP coffee mornings; life skill courses such as parenting courses, intentional health, CAP courses; outdoor movies; establishing more missional communities? The list goes on…
What if… we created a new marketing brand called ‘Sovereign’ and under this project, bring together our skate ramp, the marquee and bus resources to serve local community needs, whilst creating ongoing sustainability?
What if… these resources could be used to partner with other churches and Christian organisations to help them connect with their communities?
What if… we told some of the stories of lives being changed by Jesus as we partnered with Him in His mission in Cornwall?
What if…New Wave church really did leave the building and venture on a road trip with Jesus at the wheel?
This is the start of a new adventure… The destination is the Kingdom, the vehicle is the church (on a Bus!). Let’s see what He does in us and through us as we jump on board.
