As I prepare to embark on a new chapter by re-entering pastoral ministry, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I've had the privilege of sharing with so many through my time at Rural Ministries. I treasure the moments spent in our humble spaces, where heartfelt service and a shared mission resonate deeply with everyone involved. From shared meals and Sunday visits to gatherings at the Rural Mission Hubs, these experiences have created lasting memories and friendships that I carry with me. As I move on and hand over the reins to Jo and Jon, I want to compile some words of encouragement and challenge for you regarding what I see as crucial elements of rural church and mission.

Firstly, remember that pioneering is an act of divine courage. The Holy Spirit is always present, guiding us into uncharted territory - into the places where growth occurs only when we are willing to take risks, let go of control, and trust that God's love is more expansive than we can imagine. The Spirit’s voice is often quiet yet profound, nudging us beyond comfort into transformation. Trust that the Spirit is leading you into new ideas, new ways of service, and new depths of love. No matter how tentative, every risk you take is an act of faith and an opening to divine possibility. As Richard Rohr might say, “The sacred is in the risk, in vulnerability, in the wild trust that divine life will carry us - if we dare to follow.”

Secondly, it’s about taking risks, trusting, and believing that something greater than ourselves is at work in the world. In the story of Peter walking on the water, we find a deeply inspiring invitation - a call not just to follow Jesus from a distance, but to step courageously into the unknown. Peter’s act of stepping out of the boat is more than a miracle; it is a profound symbol of what it means to pioneer.

For those of us involved in rural churches, pioneering is not just an option - it’s often a necessity. Our communities may face the challenges of limited resources, traditional mindsets, and sometimes, a sense of isolation. The temptation can be to stay within the comfort of what’s familiar. But the Spirit of God is calling us to something bold: to be pioneers of faith, to forge new paths, to imagine new ministries, and to reach beyond the boundaries of what’s been done before.

Thirdly, pioneering begins with the willingness to believe in the impossible. Like Peter, we may see the wind and the waves around us - doubts, fears, obstacles - and feel the pull to retreat. But in those moments, we are invited to remember that Jesus is present, calling us to trust that He will uphold us in the storm. Every step forward is an act of faith, a declaration that God’s kingdom is larger than our limitations.

Doing something new often feels risky. It involves stepping into uncharted waters where failure might seem possible. But that’s the essence of pioneering - risking safety to discover something divinely inspired. When you take that initial step, you tap into a deep well of courage and trust. You become an agent of transformation, not just for your community but also for yourself.

Think of all the great pioneers in history - those who dared to explore unknown lands, to challenge conventions, and to create new opportunities. They faced storms and setbacks, yet their faith and perseverance opened the way for others to follow. As a pioneer in your church or community, your act of stepping out can inspire others to trust God in new ways, to believe that the impossible is possible with God.

Fourthly, remember that the Spirit of God is moving even in the most unlikely places. It’s active in your village, rural community, and your church’s life. By choosing to pioneer, you position yourself as a vessel through which God’s new work can flow. It’s about embracing a mindset of faith-filled adventure, knowing that when you follow Jesus into unfamiliar territory, you are not alone.

In those moments when doubt whispers and fears threaten to hold you back, cling to the promise that Jesus is with you. His presence is the assurance that no storm is too great and no sea too vast. God calls us to risk because, through our willingness to step out, divine life springs forth. New ministries, new relationships, new avenues for serving - these are fruits of faith and courage when we trust that God is with us.

Finally, be courageous. Take that first step, and then another. Trust in the Spirit’s leading, and believe that in every act of daring, God's grace is at work. Your willingness to pioneer can open doors to a future beyond what you can see - one where lives are transformed, and the story of faith continues to unfold.

The journey of pioneering is a sacred calling - a dance of faith, hope, and love. When you dare to step out of the boat, you participate in God's ongoing work of creation and renewal. You may stumble or falter along the way, but in every leap of faith, Jesus will uphold you, and miracles await on the horizon. Step out boldly, for the Kingdom of God needs courageous pioneers like you.

God bless you all as you continue on this incredible journey of faith and growth.
